Where Are You From?
A simple question or so it seems.
One l've been asked more times than I can count.
Do you mean where I was born? the street where I grew up? the school that shaped me or the place I still carry in my heart even after all these years living abroad?
Having lived in Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda and now in Canada l've learned that home is not just as a single location, it's a feeling. It's when l'm create, when i share time my family or when I'm surrounded by my creative community.
It's in the joy of dancing, community gatherings, laughter, in those moments of belonging that feel so eternal.
For me home is where I feel most alive, sometimes it lives in people, sometimes in in memories, sometimes in moments that can not be pinned to a map.
Through this interactive textile community art piece you are invited to ask yourself:
what does home mean to you without naming your country or place of birth? and what would you tell your younger self who searched for belonging and didn't feel at home?
